What is Sunspot
Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the Sun's photosphere that appear as spots darker than the surrounding areas. They are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by concentrations of magnetic field flux that inhibit convection. Sunspots usually appear in pairs of opposite magnetic polarities. Their number varies according to the approximately 11-year solar cycle.
Individual sunspots or groups of sunspots may last anywhere from a few days to a few months but eventually decay. Sunspots expand and contract as they move across the surface of the Sun, with diameters ranging from 16 km (10 mi) to 160,000 km (100,000 mi). Larger sunspots can be visible from Earth without the aid of a telescope. They may travel at relative speeds, or proper motions, of a few hundred meters per second when they first emerge.
Indicating intense magnetic activity, sunspots accompany secondary phenomena such as coronal loops, prominences, and reconnection events. Most solar flares and coronal mass ejections originate in magnetically active regions around visible sunspot groupings. Similar phenomena indirectly observed on stars other than the Sun are commonly called starspots, and both light and dark spots have been measured.

দাগ আসলে ভালোই জিনিস। একটা বহুজাতিক সংস্থার বিজ্ঞাপন। বাচ্চাদের জামায় দাগ লাগা মানে তাঁরা প্রাণবন্ত, স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত। তারা শৈশব কে উপভোগ করছে, এরকম ই একটা সুন্দর মুহুর্ত তৈরি করে বিজ্ঞাপন টি। যদিও মূল উদ্দেশ্য তাদের ডিটারজেন্ট বিপণন কিন্তু সেটা আবার আমার কাছে গৌণ।
লেখা টার উদ্দেশ্যই হলো কিছু দাগ কে সন্মান দেওয়া। যে সে দাগ নয়, এ দাগ না থাকলে পৃথিবীর উষ্ণতা কমে গিয়ে বরফ যুগ ও চলে আসতে পারে। ভাবছেন কি যা তা বলছি!
তাহলে উদাহরণ দেওয়া যাক, এডওয়ার্ড মাউন্ডার ও এনি মাউন্ডার নামের এক ব্রিটিশ দম্পতি 1890 সালের আশেপাশে একাধিক বৈজ্ঞানিক পেপার প্রকাশ করে জানালেন তার প্রায় 200 বছর (1645-1715) আগে থেকে ইউরোপের তাপমাত্রা যে কমে গিয়ে ছোট বরফ যুগ এসেছে তার পিছনে নাকি ওই দাগের অবদান আছে। অবদান মানে ওই সময়ে ওই দাগ নাকি না থাকার মতন ই ছিল। তাতেই বিপত্তি। যাই হোক, কেন ওই ছোট বরফ যুগ তা নিয়ে এখনো বৈজ্ঞানিক মহলে মতানৈক্য থাকলেও উপরের কারণ টি সব থেকে বেশি গ্রহণযোগ্য। এতটাই যে ওই সময়কাল কে এখন মাউন্ডার মিনিমাম বলা হয়ে থাকে।
তারপর ধরুন জন ডালটন। বিজ্ঞানের জগতের এক মহীরুহ। তার পরমানুবাদ সম্পর্কে আমরা সবাই ই প্রায় ওয়াকিবহাল। উনিও এই দাগ সম্পর্কে আগ্রহী ছিলেন। উনার জীবিতকালে অর্থাৎ 1790 থেকে 1830 এর মাঝে এই দাগ কমে গেছিল। মাউন্ডার মিনিমাম এর মতন না হলে ও স্বাভাবিক এর থেকে কম। ইউরোপের তাপমাত্রা সেই সময় ও অস্বাভাবিক ভাবেই কম ছিল। উনার নামে ওই সময়কালের নাম এখন ডালটন মিনিমাম।
ও হ্যাঁ যেটা বলা হয়নি, দাগ টার পোশাকি নাম সৌর-কলঙ্ক।

Sunspot Observed throughout the day of 27.06.2021 at IST. North is down in the first Image which is taken at 10:57 IST. Later when the Sun reached 12 Noon the Telescope orientation changed. Also, the spots are moving Westward in the last 3 images. This correction was done by Ms. Rahi Nath, Amateur Astronomer.
